Credit Bureaus
There are three national credit bureaus: Equifax, Trans Union and Experian. Most lending institutions report your monthly payment history to one or all three of the national credit bureaus. In addition to disclosing your payment history, each of the credit bureaus assigns a “Credit Score” or “FICO” to your credit file. Your credit scores are calculated using several factors, such as past payment history, number of existing debts, types of credit and your credit utilization. Scores may range from 300-850, however scores above 800 are very rare. Credit bureaus are required to give you one free copy of your credit report per calendar year. However, the request must be made in writing and your free copy does not need to include your Credit Score. If there are items on your credit report you would like to dispute you may do so via mail or through the credit bureau’s web site. The credit bureaus are required by law to investigate and respond to your inquiry(s) within 30 days.
